| The forces of British Major General Charles Cornwallis surrender to French and American forces after the Battle of Yorktown. |
British troops led by General Charles Cornwallis surrender to American forces led by General George Washington at Yorktown, Virginia. Over the previous month, Washington and his French allies had encircled the British position at Yorktown, preventing their escape or reinforcement by land or by the sea with the aid of French ships.
The famous battle effectively ended the Revolutionary War, which had begun in 1775. Two years later, peace between the British and the Americans was officially established on September 3, 1783, with the Treaty of Paris.
